The site borrows partially from a scene of the movie ''Dumb and Dumber'' in which Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) informs his friend Harry on what exactly is the most annoying sound in the world. The audio is a loop of that sound, and the image was simply a Google image result of Jim Carrey's character in the movie ''Dumb and Dumber''.

Spinoffs of the site would usually include different sounds that are also considered annoying. Some of these sites were not even related to the original site, except for the title. Others would make Lloyd Christmas say these annoying sounds instead of the original.

After waning, the fad made a comeback on February 21, 2008 when {{ytmnduser|AndySavage}} created [http://jimcarreybobblehead.ytmnd.com/ The most annoying bobblehead in the world]. The site combined two Jim Carrey characters: Lloyd Christmas of ''Dumb and Dumber'' and ''Ace Ventura'' of a movie of the same name. Ace Ventura's head was edited onto a bobblehead, and when a finger touched the head, it would move erratically, just as it did in a famous scene in ''Ace Ventura''. While it was doing this, Lloyd Christmas was screaming the most annoying sound in the world. The site is currently the fourth highest rated site of all time.
