The Song
What is Love was originally a song by dance artist Haddaway, recorded in 1993. It only reached #11 in the US, but was #2 in the UK and Germany and #1 in several other countries. It was Haddaway's only US hit. The chorus was samples in 2010 for the song No Love by Eminem featuring Lil Wayne.
The Skit
During the nineties, Saturday Night Live did a series of skits featuring the song called 'A Night at the Roxbury'. In them, Will Ferrell, Chris Kattan, and a guest star would go clubbing at many dance clubs and fail to pick up chicks. Guest stars for this skit included Jim Carrey, Tom Hanks, Martin Short, Alec Baldwin, and Sylvester Stallone. It was made into a movie in 1998.
The Fad
In 2005, user ligamentx made a site with an image from on of the skits, featuring Will Ferrell, Chris Kattan, and Jim Carrey bobbing their heads up and down. The domain for this site is ckjcwf, which stand for Chris Kattan, Jim Carrey, and Will Ferrell. This YTMND has spread into its own fad, in which other people's faces are photoshopped over the original YTMND, and the YTMND plays a parody on "What Is Love" by Haddaway. Some other sites may take clips from different TV shows/movies where the drivers and passengers may be moving their heads up and down as seen in the original video. The fad also achieved (relative) mainstream success when a flash movie compilation of the fad circulated around the internet.
What is Love was included in Volume 5 of the YTMND Soundtrack, while the "goth version" by MDP was included in Volume 2. A similar song, "What Is Love" by Howard Jones, is used in PTKFGS instead. There is also one version including Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody.
