The Byrd fad, also known as the Barbaric fad, is based on a speech by late Senator and former KKK member Robert Byrd on dog fighting, given in Congress after NFL star Michael Vick was indicted as part of a dogfighting operation. During Byrd's speech, he repeated the word "barbaric", to describe the act of "training these poor creatures to turn themselves into fighting machines." The fad started with a site created by Lemonei, which had a picture of Senator Byrd, audio from a section of his speech, and the text: "let that word resound."
